The quiet one, by candlelight
Two days after Christmas, when the house is still full of cousins and the fridge is still full of pie, we gather around the hearth for the gentlest evening of the year. Candles are lit for the members we've lost, Susan's toast is read by the youngest present, and the new year's birthday circle is announced.

How the evening unfolds
5pm – Lighting the candles
A candle for each member remembered this year, lit by their nearest branch as names are read.
6pm – Susan's toast
The youngest at the table reads the toast, and we all pass the potatoes in her honour.
7pm – Carols & the circle
Three carols, no rehearsals, followed by the announcement of next year's birthday circle.
