The quiet keeper of 4,000 photographs
Robert inherited his grandmother Helen's shoebox in 2000 and refused to let it fade. Over fifteen patient years he scanned, dated and cross-checked all four thousand photographs — the great digitising that made this website possible.
A school librarian by trade, he believed every picture deserved a caption and every caption deserved a source. His indexing system — still used by our archivists today — can find any face in the collection in under a minute.
