The man who kept the gates open
Arthur married Helen in 1957 and spent the next sixty-six years keeping the farmhouse standing — roof, fences, orchard and all. Every reunion happened because he mowed the field, borrowed the tables and lit the outdoor lamps himself.
He planted the heritage oak the week his first grandchild was born, saying a family should have something that outlives them all. We gather under it still, every December, and raise one glass to the man with the ladder and the lights.
